How to qualify for women's basketball at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Along with hosts France, 11 other teams will participate in the women's basketball tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The women's basketball event made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The United States has without a doubt been the most successful team in women's basketball at the Olympics having won eight out of 10 tournaments (did not win in 1976 and 1980), winning seven consecutive tournaments between 1996 and 2020, and have only failed to win a medal on one occasion (1980).

The women's basketball tournament at the Olympics has been a 12 team tournament since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the Paris 2024 tournament is again set to feature 12 teams. The format for the Paris 2024 tournament is not yet known, however at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics the 12 teams were split into three groups of four with the top two teams from each group and the two best 3rd placed teams advancing to the quarterfinals. The preliminary round games for Paris 2024 are tentatively scheduled to be held at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, while the knockout rounds will take place at the Arena Bercy in Paris.

Qualified teams

With hosts France receiving automatic qualification, the remaining 11 teams in the Paris 2024 women's basketball tournament will qualify through one of two paths: the 2022 Women's Basketball World Cup and the 2024 Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.

The 2022 Women's Basketball World Cup champions, the United States, have already qualified for Paris 2024. They will be joined by a further 10 teams from four separate Olympic qualifying tournaments to be held in 2024.
